When we think of prairies and meadows, quintessential plants like Echinacea, Sunflowers, Rudbeckia, and Monardas typically come to mind. But this ecological niche is one of the most diverse with a large cast of characters.
Beebalm
The wild Beebalm, Monarda fistulosa, is a wonderful plant. Adaptable, gorgeous, medicinal, and the pollinators truly go bananas for it! Hummingbirds love it too!
Blanketflower
Bright and cheerful, long-blooming and low maintenance, Blanketflowers are a mainstay in our Columbia Valley prairies and grasslands. Easy to grow and giving an abundance of pollen and nectar to pollinators.
Elk Thistle
One of the coolest native thistles around, period! Cirsium scariosum looks like Medusa was turned into a plant. A very well behaved native thistle that throws "Great Gatsby" style parties when it's in bloom! Other flowers just look longingly at the thistle parties.
Echinacea angustifolia
The northern most Echinacea species and bulletproof hardy. They don't need overly fertile soil and prefer the soil drier. A wonderful addition to the meadowscape.
